New Namibian Visa Requirements for Citizens of Germany and Other Countries

According to a recent announcement by Namibia’s Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, travelers from Germany and several other countries will soon be required to obtain a visa online before departure, pay the applicable fee, and receive their visa upon arrival in Namibia.

The government said the new policy is based on the principle of reciprocity, applying visa requirements to citizens of countries that do not offer Namibian nationals similar visa-free access. In its statement, the ministry noted that while Namibia has maintained an open and welcoming approach toward many countries, some have not extended the same treatment in return.

Although the new measures have been confirmed, authorities have not yet announced the exact date they will take effect. Officials stated that the implementation timeline will be released soon. Once introduced, eligible travelers will need to complete an online visa application and pay the required fee before traveling, with the visa issued on arrival.

The announcement has drawn criticism from the Tourism Alliance of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Business Council, which warned that the new visa requirements could discourage international visitors and negatively affect tourism and regional economic growth. Industry representatives believe the additional administrative steps may reduce visitor numbers from Germany and other affected countries.

Namibia’s Ministry of Home Affairs stressed that the policy is not intended to discourage legitimate travel, but rather to promote fairness and equal treatment in international relations.
